Celery

Herb

Both celery seeds and the juice of celery stalks are used as a herb to promote alkalinization and as a mild diuretic. These effects may act together to reduce the inflammation of arthritis, and celery seed extract is commonly used by natural medicine practitioners in arthritis treatment. The juice of celery stalks is a rich source of organic sodium which is said to help counteract some of the harmful effects of inorganic sodium chloride.

Cell membrane

The outer membrane of the cell, which controls the entry of nutrients into the cell and the release of wastes. Also known as the plasma membrane, it consists of a thin layer of phospholipid and cholesterol molecules in which proteins are embedded. A variety of binding sites are located on the outer surface of the cell membrane, for the attachment of hormones and other chemical messengers. The cell membrane can therefore receive chemical signals which regulate the cell's activity. Chemical reactions can also take place on the inner or outer surface of the cell membrane. Other roles include cell-to-cell recognition and communication. Fatty acids are converted to prostaglandins in the cell membrane. Free radical damage to the cell membrane reduces the membrane's ability to transport nutrients, oxygen and water into the cell and to regulate the excretion of waste matter from the cell. Free radical damage can also cause cell membranes to rupture.

Celloid minerals

Supplements prepared from the inorganic minerals originally identified by Dr Wilhelm Schüssler in Germany in 1873, using a process developed by Dr Maurice Blackmore of Australia in 1938. The minerals are:

  • Calcium fluoride
  • Calcium phosphate
  • Calcium sulphate
  • Iron phosphate
  • Magnesium phosphate
  • Potassium chloride
  • Potassium phosphate
  • Potassium sulphate
  • Silicon dioxide
  • Sodium chloride
  • Sodium phosphate
  • Sodium sulphate
Whereas Schüssler's tissue salts are sold in homoeopathic potencies, Blackmore's celloids are sold in small physiological doses. However the prescribing indications used by celloid mineral practitioners often have more in common with homoeopathy than with nutritional therapy.
