Coffee
Coffee contains methylxanthines such as caffeine, which act as central nervous system
stimulants.
The over-consumption of coffee may produce any of the
following effects:
- Addiction (even from the consumption of as little as one cup a
day)
- Anxiety and nervousness
- Birth defects (if consumed by expectant mothers)
- Aggravation of psychiatric symptoms
- Fibrocystic breast disease or breast lumps
- Increased insulin production, resulting in symptoms of
hypoglycaemia
- Palpitations
- Raised blood cholesterol levels (only if coffee is boiled)
- Rapid heartbeat
- Temporarily raised blood pressure.
Reports of a link between coffee consumption and pancreatic
cancer have not been confirmed, but research does suggest that the consumption of more than five cups of coffee a day raises the risk of heart disease. Instant coffee contains more caffeine than the
drink made from ground coffee. Coffee is a rich source of vitamin B3 (in its
nicotinic acid form).
Collagen
The main protein which forms the skin, joints, bones,
teeth, muscles and many other tissues throughout the body. The body's production
of collagen is dependent on vitamin C.
Colloidal minerals
Colloidal minerals are described as the smallest particles
which minerals can be divided into while still keeping individual
characteristics. They remain in solution in water rather than going into
suspension, because of their negative charge and size/weight ratio. It is
claimed that these characteristics, together with the large surface area which
results from their small size, gives them special qualities of absorption and
assimilation. Colloidal mineral supplements may be manufactured from humic shale
- a type of rock consisting of prehistoric plant life. The mineral content is
therefore in organic, colloidal form.
Availability: Not
easily available. May be sold under different names or through specialist
suppliers.
Colon
The large intestine. Absorbs water from digested food and
contains many bacteria.
Colostrum
Human breast milk is known as colostrum in the first two
weeks of production. It is a yellowish transparent fluid containing more
protein, sodium, potassium and chloride and less fat and carbohydrate than
mature milk.
Coltsfoot
Herb
An old-established cough remedy and member of the daisy
family, coltsfoot tea taken daily on waking has been found effective for the
symptomatic relief of chronic emphysema and silicosis. Widely available in
health food shops.
