In 111 Bangladeshi children with acute or chronic diarrhoea and increased gut
permeability compared with normals, supplementation with 5 mg per kg of body
weight per day significantly reduced gut permeability. Roy SK et al: Impact of
zinc supplementation on intestinal permeability in Bangladeshi children with
acute diarrhoea and persistent diarrhoea syndrome. J Pediatr Gastroenterol
Nutr 15(3):289-96, 1992.
In a double-blind, randomized trial on children aged 6-35 months in India,
zinc supplementation was found to significantly reduce the incidence of chronic
diarrhoea and dysentery in those children with initially low zinc levels.
