Chronic leg ulcers are associated with low serum zinc levels and healing is
promoted by zinc supplementation. Fawaz F: Zinc deficiency in surgical patients:
a clinical study. J Parenter Enteral Nutr 9(3):364-9, 1985.
In a randomized, controlled clinical trial, comparing the effectiveness of
vitamin A supplements with that of De-Nol liquid, sucralfate and pirenzepine
against chronic gastric ulcers, all treatments resulted in a significant
reduction in ulcer size. In the second week the dynamic of ulcer healing was the
most favourable in the vitamin A group. Patty I et al: A comparative dynamic
study of the effectiveness of gastric cytoprotection by vitamin A, De-Nol,
sucralfate and ulcer healing by pirenzepine in patients with chronic gastric
ulcer (a multiclinical and randomized study). Acta Physiol Hung 64(3-4):379-84,
1984.
In a double-blind study on 18 patients, those taking zinc sulphate
supplements had a gastric ulcer healing rate three times that of patients
treated with placebo. Frommer DJ: The healing of gastric ulcers by zinc
sulphate. Med J Aust 2(21):793-6, 1975.
36 of 50 patients with gastric and duodenal ulcer treated with a vitamin U
preparation experienced a reduction or complete disappearance of their main
clinical symptoms. Gastric secretion, motor activity and emptying of the stomach
and permeability of the secretory cells of the stomach were significantly
improved and there were signs of regenerative processes in the stomach.
